Dimensional Innovations, Local Orgs Collaborate to Fight COVID-19

Medical face shield designed to combat global PPE shortage

Kansas City, MO (March 26, 2020) – Dimensional Innovations, in collaboration with InStore Design Display, The Center for Design Research at the University of Kansas, and the University of Kansas Health System, has developed an OPEN SOURCE face shield design to help combat the global shortage of personal protective equipment (PPE) for medical professionals fighting the COVID-19 pandemic.

“We’ve all witnessed the devastation this coronavirus has caused around the world, so we had to find a way to help,” said Tucker Trotter, CEO, Dimensional Innovations. “When all the brave medical personnel working around the clock began running out of face shields and other protective equipment, this team started designing a solution that can be sourced and utilized by front-line responders. This face shield can be created and sourced anywhere and provide relief to the current shortage.”

The Center for Design Research at the University of Kansas has worked closely with Dimensional Innovations and InStore Design Display to provide different concepts and mockups on the shield’s design, ensuring safety and mobility for the wearer. The University of Kansas Health System provided

immediate and valuable feedback to Dimensional Innovations’ lab with crucial information to make the shield more functional while still being quick and easy to manufacture anywhere.

The shield consists of two interlocking plastic parts cut from PETG, a clear plastic sheet material,

that provides significant durability, chemical resistance and excellent formability for manufacturing. No other raw materials are necessary to source for assembly. Anyone with the capability to cut .020 PETG (or similar clear plastic sheet) can produce this face shield, making distribution and accessibility widely available.

Trotter joins prominent local business leaders Nathaniel Hagedorn, Tyler Nottberg, Dave Cummings, Andy Deister and Taimoor Nana in spearheading a community effort to combat COVID-19 in the Midwest and throughout the nation.
